More than 200 men were arrested at a Malaysian males-only bathhouse on suspicion of indulging in illegal prostitution.
On November 28, at about 8 p.m., the Kuala Lumpur police raided the Chow Kit Club and arrested people who were in various stages of undress.
Following a report about “suspicious immoral activities by male patrons,” investigators gathered information and conducted surveillance for two weeks before the raid.
201 men aged 19 to 60 were arrested for violating Penal Code Section 377B (unnatural sexual activity), a rule from the British colonial era that forbids males from having consensual sex. The offense is punishable by whipping and a maximum 20-year jail sentence. Also seized were condoms and other items that cops believed were used for sexual encounters.
Thereafter, the suspects were moved to the adjacent Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters (IPD). This was the beginning of a torturous 48-hour period in which the detainees were confined to a single detention room with minimal food and nowhere to lie down or sit. They were still able to communicate with the outside world, though, because they had access to their phones.
Still, 171 of the men, all of whom were Malaysian, were let go without being charged. The other people, who were from other nations, were let go after being kept for two days.
