Peter Kelly a 28-year-old Toronto resident who contracted MonkeyPox tells the Canadian Press<\/p>\n
\u201cI was so delirious,\u201d he said in an interview, as he described the agonizing symptoms associated with the disease and the sense of isolation during about three weeks of home quarantine.<\/p>\n
\u201cI must have been really sick and I didn\u2019t even know. For two days I didn\u2019t really move, I would just go to the washroom and go back to bed and sleep some more. It was super high fever and night chills. I was wearing a winter jacket in bed, I was so cold.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kelly\u2019s fever broke on the third day and soon after he said he noticed red rash. He said he immediately began to search the web for what the rash might be.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou start Googling this and that\u2019s the worst thing you could ever do.\u201d<\/p>\n
Doctors suspected it was herpes, which Kelly said \u201cfreaked\u201d him out.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat started to really affect my mental health because you can\u2019t cure it. You can just control that over the years.\u201d<\/p>\n
But he looked at the pictures more closely, and wondered if it was monkeypox.<\/p>\n
He went to the local hospital and told the authorities: \u201cI need a monkeypox test, please.\u201d The result came back positive.<\/p>\n
Kelly said he was one of the first people in Ontario to be infected with that virus and is now part of a study among former patients being conducted at St. Michael\u2019s Hospital in Toronto.<\/p>\n
Kelly said his rash and lesions were some of the most painful things he has had to endure and the simple act of rolling over was \u201cexcruciating.\u201d<\/p>\n
It was when the rash started to turn into boils that the pain became unimaginable, he recalled.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat is when the pain was throbbing. And I mean throbbing,\u201d he said. \u201cIt felt like electric shocks. I didn\u2019t sleep for probably like 30 hours or something. It was just so painful. I had a washcloth between my teeth trying to clamp on it, just to rock myself through the pain. But I couldn\u2019t handle it. It was insane.\u201d<\/p>\n
One lesion on his left foot began to pool blood because he had to put his weight on it to walk, he said.<\/p>\n
Adding to the physical pain was the mental stress, he said.<\/p>\n
Apart from visits to hospitals and clinics, Kelly remained isolated in his tiny Toronto apartment.<\/p>\n
\u201cI felt helpless because I\u2019m being told to isolate for God only knows how long and I\u2019m in excruciating pain,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
During those three weeks, Kelly said he lost all his dancing and training work but his bills kept piling up.<\/p>\n
He spent $50 a week at the coin-operated laundry in his building, and $120 on bandages and sterile supplies.<\/p>\n
Friends dropped off food and groceries and coins for the laundry. Toronto Public Health<\/a> gave him a grocery store gift card, although he didn\u2019t know how to use it while in isolation.<\/p>\n As one of the first diagnosed cases of monkeypox in Toronto, Kelly said he felt \u201che was a bit of a guinea pig.\u201d<\/p>\n He was told to \u201ctriple bag\u201d all his garbage and label it as hazardous waste, to be picked up by a team, he said.<\/p>\n Kelly said he \u201cfor sure\u201d contracted the virus at a bathhouse. \u201cI got it because I like to have sex,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n While he got a lot of support, he also received some hateful messages on social media.<\/p>\n \u201c\u2019You got the gay pox\u2019, or \u2018you\u2019re disgusting\u2019, or \u2018you deserve to get it,\u201d\u2019 he said recalling some of the messages.<\/p>\n Kelly said that there was a stigma to contracting monkeypox, and he initially worried how people would react to his infection. But be decided to be open about it.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m going to tell someone about this because there are more people, it\u2019s not just me. They\u2019re in the same situation at home isolating and there\u2019s no one talking about it. There\u2019s no resources or anything.\u201d<\/p>\n He said he would like the government and public health agencies<\/a> to devote more resources to fighting the spread of monkeypox.<\/p>\n His isolation period ended on June 21 and Kelly said he found a whole new appreciation for the outdoors.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m getting on with my life.\u201d<\/p>\n Peter Kelly in his own words below<\/p>\n
