Wellington\u2019s Checkmate gay sauna will remain closed until March due to major earthquake damage to the adjacent Reading Cinemas car parking building.<\/p>\n

TPTB at Checkmate first wrote on their website in November<\/p>\n

Due to the recent Earthquake damage to nearby buildings Fire department and police have cordoned off Tory Street, So there is no access to Checkmate till further notice. This is out of our control \u2013 for more information please contact the Wellington City Council or the Wellington Civil Defence. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The sauna briefly reopened only to have to shut down again writing this statement at the end of November<\/p>\n

Checkmate will be closed for 2 \u2013 4 weeks active immediately by order of the wellington city council.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But this has now been revised to two to three months, according to Joe George, Checkmate\u2019s owner. This is a shame because this is the only gay bathhouse in the area. In addition the Christmas holidays are busiest times for the bathhouse industry. As one person wrote on their site<\/p>\n

Love the place and go there all the time\u2026 The one thing I always laugh at are the guys that go there and then spend all night simply walking around the place and not talking to anyone. Newsflash guys! We\u00b4re all here for the same thing!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
