Greenhouse Health Club recently submitted an application with the city to sell adult DVD and sex toys. However they faced opposition from residents and Police and Crime Commissioner Kathryn Holloway. <\/p>\n

In a letter of objection sent to Luton Borough Council, Kathryn Holloway claimed the application has caused<\/p>\n

\u201cwidespread offence and very deep concern\u201d and warned that if the application was allowed, \u201ca number of potential policing issues may arise\u201d because it was five minutes away from the mosque.<\/p>\n

\u201cLuton Borough Council is usually particularly aware of matters of cultural sensitivity,\u201d she added. \u201cI trust therefore that you will fully understand that, given the large and devout Muslim population in this area of the borough, there is naturally a high level of religious and cultural opposition to such a business among these residents which needs to be respected, in my view.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Greenhouse decided to withdraw their application because of the letter, in addition to a petition that had been submitted. <\/p>\n

As reported in Luton Today<\/p>\n

One of those who signed the petition claimed that Greenhouse \u201cwill bring unpleasant diseases to our communities\u201d, while another slammed the owner for having \u201cno shame\u201d and attempting to expand the business with something \u201cso disgusting near and around holy surroundings.\u201d<\/p>\n

Others labelled the sauna \u201cimmoral\u201d, \u201ccrazy\u201d and \u201cdangerous for our children\u201d.<\/p>\n

One of the petition\u2019s signatories wrote that homosexuality stems from \u201cbrain diseases\/malfunction\u201d and \u201cincorrect thinking\u201d.<\/p>\n

The comments have been denounced by LGBT rights charity Stonewall, which told the Herald & Post that the language used is \u201chomophobic and hateful\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
